One of my favorite parts of local and national travel is speaking with students, teachers, professors, policy people, and parents. It’s fun to connect the dots—to talk about how large-scale population growth in African cities will transform elections in the U.S. and Europe; why The Great British Baking Show is the most popular television show in the world; and the reasons why students in the old coal mining region of eastern Kentucky taught me how to think about the former Roma village of Oriahovitsa, Bulgaria. I love it when well-educated people and curious students ask to speak with me after the speech to say, simply, “I never looked at the world that way before.”
