Sweet Victory Cover 6.png

We couldn't find the book we wanted, so we decided to write it ourselves. SWEET VICTORY began as a science book for people with pre-diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Our intention was to explain how the body worked, the importance of protein, the unimportance of carbohydrates, and the ways blood, organs and systems work, or fail to do their jobs properly. We began to write about the importance of exercise -- not just any exercise, but fitness programs that would make a significant difference for people with diabetes. As we expanded our view of science, we added sections about psychology and human behavior. We emphasized the importance of self-care, and the daily routine required to manage blood sugar at a safe and healthy level. Then, we added special sections to discuss various diets, pharmaceutical solutions, and food choices. What began as a straightforward book about metabolism became something far more useful -- a guide to the science of the human body, mind and spirit written to guide people with diabetes, and their loved ones. Everything is based upon the best available scientific information, and written in plain language. We are currently finishing the manuscript; please be patient as we complete the free preview edition of the entire book.

THE AUTHORS

Wendy_Pogozelski-2.jpg

Wendy Pogozelski holds the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the State University of New York at Geneseo. She earned her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins and did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Naval Research Laboratory. Her interests in the biochemistry of nutrition were initially spiked by a desire to make her biochemistry classes more interesting but were also fueled by her own diagnosis of type 1/juvenile diabetes at age 40. As she began reading every paper she could, attending every conference she could find, and making contact with a wide range of authors, scientists, and physicians, she developed lectures in the biochemistry of diabetes and nutrition that became known outside the classroom. She found that not only were her students eager to learn, many other audiences were interested as well. Her expertise has led to highly-cited publications on nutritional strategies in diabetes and low-carb diets and invitations  to speak at venues ranging from hospitals to art festivals. In 2015, she gave a TEDx talk as part of a series produced by Howard Blumenthal.  Thus began a long a fruitful collaboration.

Howard Blumenthal is a field researcher, scholar, television producer, author, journalist. He is especially curious about what, why, and how people learn and understand. Howard has worked with children and teenagers for much of his career, winning a Peabody and Emmy Awards for his work with U.S. public television (Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?), and a United Nations Public Service Award (On the Other Side of the Fence). He is a former New York Times syndicated newspaper columnist, the author of more than 20 books about creativity, marketing, media, music, and U.S. history. For several years, Howard has been the Executive Director of the 21st Century Learning Project at The University of Virginia, and continues as a Senior Scholar at The University of Pennsylvania's Positive Psychology Center. In 2022, he received an Honorary Doctorate for his work in global citizenship education from The State University of New York.
